Security based features: eSIMs offer an additional security component that is not found in previous SIM cards as eSIMs can act as a secure element embedded inside the device. Inside the eSIM chip, in addition to connectivity, other applications can be included such as mechanisms for sending information, location, operation, or device identification. Since they are inside the device and cannot be altered, eSIMs can be used as a mechanism to prevent falsification of reported information.
5G ready: On 5G networks IoT devices can benefit of lower latency and extended number of devices per network cell avoiding connectivity quality issues due to congestion.
eSIM + Dynamic multi-IMSI solution
Since IoT connectivity is boosted by the eSIM, eUICC ecosystem still has its downsides: any IoT deployment using eUICC that wants to change MNO can do so, however it is required first to check that the new MNO is suited with the corresponding SM-DP and it requires integration with IoT Service Provider’s SM-SR. As a result, IoT deployments might suffer significant downtime.
The Multi-IMSI benefits
While an IMSI (International Subscriber Identity) is a globally unique number used to authenticate the device on a cellular network, the Multi-IMSI is a Java application running on the SIM able to swap IMSIs following a predetermined business rules & logic. That means IoT devices can switch cellular networks using a single MNO profile.
As a result, Multi-IMSI connectivity means connectivity service is instantly available with no further integrations over all countries and networks the host MNO has roaming agreements with.
The only Multi-IMSI downside is about its regulation. Some countries’ regulators and/or MNOs don’t allow Permanent Roaming. That means, IoT devices cannot use a foreign IMSI to authenticate and connect in a local network during the whole device lifecycle.
eUICC ecosystem is the solution for those countries where Permanent Roaming is banned.
As a result, the combination of eUICC + Multi-IMSI technologies maximizes the geographical scope using a single eSIM SKU while minimizing the integration and testing burden & associated extra costs.
